A brief history of Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2000 artworks, including around 850 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. He was highly influential among later artists; during his lifetime he sold only one painting (The Red Vineyard); after his death it became an icon for expressionism and modern art.

Van Gogh was born to a middle-class family in the southern Netherlands. He was named after his grandfather, and became an art dealer after he completed his training as an evangelist minister. He married his cousin, Jo van Gogh-Bonger, in 1873 and moved to Paris in 1886 where he developed his distinctive style. He became mentally ill and committed suicide in 1890 at age 37.
